Driveways add beauty and value to your home. There are many different styles of driveways. The type of driveway that you choose for your home will probably depend upon your budget.

Driveway Types

There are three main types of driveways.

  • asphalt:
    the cheapest type of driveway; has to be sealed every year; only lasts about 15 years until it has to be replaced.
  • concrete:
    more expensive than asphalt; last a lot longer; very expensive to replace;
  • block paving:
    the most expensive and attractive types of driveways; time consuming to install; will last many years more than cement and asphalt.

Common problems with concrete and asphalt driveways are:

  • Concrete driveway can shift or crack
  • Asphalt driveway develop holes and become worn looking

Driveways can crack or settle for any number of reasons including:

  • Large tree planted close to the drive.
  • Water and sewer lines underneath.
  • Underground utility lines.

Driveway - How to keep it in top condition?

There are number of things to do to prevent your concrete or blacktop driveway from cracking:

  • Remove vegetation that's close to your driveway:
    Smaller vegetation can be carefully dug up and transplanted to more appropriate locations
  • Maintaine your water drainage systems:
    Just one leak can allow waste water from your gutters to flow out onto your driveway
  • Make sure to keep your driveway edged:
    Remove any weeds that are within two or three inches of any of its borders
  • On a regular basis seal and waterproof your driveway:
    Use good-quality product to seal and waterproof your driveway
  • Keep your driveway cleaned:
    Periodically sweep off tree branches, leaves, grass clippings and other loose debris;
    use a leaf blower instead of a conventional broom;
    use a low-pressure washer to remove dirt, gasoline, oil, chemicals and other harmful pollutants;
